A brief and incomplete history of the Lindsay Community Theater

The Lindsay Theater was renovated and reopened in the late 60's as a movie theater, but closed due to a lack of patronage in 1982. A small group of theater people, mostly members of a budding acting company known as The Town Players, decided to purchase the theater and turn it into a playhouse. This was accomplished in a remarkable short time through donations, no-interest loans, and fundraising. Leading this charge was Peggy Sanders, followed by Hal Munter and many other dedicated Lindsay residents.

Once the building was purchased, changes had to be made in order to use it for theater productions. The screen was removed, and some simple lighting was installed, and then we were off. The first play to be presented was "Egad, the Woman in White" in May of 1983 directed by Hal Munter. This was a high school producton. The first Lindsay Community Theater production was "Life With Father" in August of 1983.

Once we were going, there was no stopping us. Since those early years with scenery out on the street and lights on stands, many renovations have been made. The stage has been extended twice, the Gas Company building and the alley behind was purchased, the alley was enclosed, the lighting system was improved, the sound system was improved, a new proscenium was added to the front of the stage, and the balcony was converted into a cabaret. We have come a long way, but there are still many things to do. The lighting and sound systems need refurbishing, the carpeting needs replacing in areas, and the upkeep on existing equipment is expensive, especially the neon sign on the front of the building.

The last two seasons have been successful, but patronage at our productions has been sporadic. Full houses, successful fundraisers, and generous donations are essential if the theater is to enjoy continued success. Membership in the theater family and the purchase of season tickets are just two of the ways you can support the theater. Volunteers are also needed to help backstage and in the front lobby for all productions. If you can help in any way click on one of the links below to get involved.

There are many details that have been left out of this brief history, but the most important part of the story is the cooperation and dedication of the many individuals who work as a team to make the Lindsay Community Theater a vital part of the cultural life of the friendly city of Lindsay.
